The Marine Engineering Department (DEM) was created in October 2008, upon publication of ENIDH's Statutes (Legislative Order number 40/2008, of August 18), which adapted the previous Statutes of the Institution to the Legal Regime for Higher Education Institutes (RJIES). The DEM is the organisational unit responsible for the management of the engineering master's degree courses, bachelor's degrees, and higher professional technical courses (CTeSP).

This department is currently responsible for the following qualifications:

    • Marine Machines Engineering (MEMM)

    • Marine Machines Engineering (MSEM - daytime)
    • Marine Electronic Engineering (LEEM - evening)

    CTeSPs in:

    • Naval Mechanical Maintenance (CTeSP - MMN)
    • Naval Electronics and Automation (CTESP-MMN)

    • Information Technology and Network Systems (CTeSP-SIR)

The teaching staff of the Marine Engineering Department is composed of approximately 34 lecturers, 29% of whom hold a PhD. There are also other lecturers in the department who are currently studying towards a PhD.

At present there are approximately 350 students enrolled in the engineering courses at ENIDH, which corresponds to approximately 46% of the total student population of 750 .

The DEM also participates in the lecturing of the degree courses for Deck and Bridge Operations, Transport and Logistics Management, and Port Management.

The ENIDH Marine Engineering Department benefits from the cumulative experience of several decades of work performed by the lecturers through their teaching activities, and research and development. The faculty of the DEM, which has 11 lecturers with doctorates, has a diverse range of competencies and qualifications, and with the large range of high quality laboratory equipment and advanced simulators at their disposal, the DEM faculty offers exceptional training and teaching to the students.

Several of the DEM's lecturers regularly conduct research activities at various research centers accredited by the Fundação para Ciência e Tecnologia (Foundation for Science and Technology) (FCT), namely IDMEC, INOVA and INESC. In the future, they will be incorporating the Centro de Investigação e Desenvolvimento (Research and Development Centre) (CID), which is currently in the implementation phase.

The DEM offers refresher exams for Engineering Officers and Radio-electronic Officers who would like to resume their maritime careers, as well as the Maritime Administration's (DGRM) Competence Exams for various merchant marine officer certifications, as required under the Marine Registration Regulations (RIM).
