PREVENTION OF AND RESPONSE TO VIOLENCE AND HARASSMENT

Objective In accordance with the new amendments to STCW Convention Table A-VI/1-4 (Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities), established by IMO Resolution MSC.560(108) and entering into force on 1 January 2026, this training course is intended for all seafarers who hold a valid Basic Safety Certificate.
The course aims to provide trainees with the competences, knowledge and attitudes required to actively contribute to the prevention of and response to violence and harassment on board ships, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault, in compliance with the updated provisions of the STCW Code, Table A-VI/1-4.
Upon completion of the course, trainees will be able to identify unacceptable behaviours, understand their impact on safety, crew welfare and the working environment on board, as well as apply appropriate procedures for prevention, incident notification and response, thereby promoting a culture of respect, safety and social responsibility within the maritime context.
Contents
Demonstrate basic knowledge and recognition of violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying, sexual assault and the continuation of harm.
Recognise the consequences of violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault, on victims, perpetrators and witnesses, and understand their effects on safety, health and well-being on board ships.
Recognise that factors such as abuse of power, discrimination, stress, isolation, fatigue, drugs and alcohol, among others, may contribute to violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault.
Identify situations involving violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of the measures to be taken to intervene and to report cases of violence and harassment, including sexual harassment, bullying and sexual assault, in accordance with applicable procedures.
Understand the basic principles of a trauma-informed response, and provide appropriate support to victims, witnesses and oneself.
