The Research and Development Centre (CID) of the National Maritime College of Portugal (ENIDH) is a functional unit for scientific, pedagogical, technical, training, research, and service provision support within its specific fields of operation, as stipulated in Article 81 of the ENIDH Statutes (Normative Dispatch no. 16/2021, of June 17).
The CID was founded in 2019 by 8 PhD Professors: Victor Franco, Pedro Silveira, Mário Assunção, Miguel Silva, João Frade, Pedro Teodoro, Paulo José Silva da Costa, and José Manuel Dores Costa, and 2 Professors with the title of Specialist of Recognized Merit: Manuela Batista and Fernando Cruz Gonçalves. As of 2026, the CID has more than 50 members, including 31 PhD holders and 14 Specialists of Recognized Merit.
According to paragraph 3 of Article 82 of the ENIDH Statutes, the following objectives of the CID stand out:

• Encourage research activities;
• Foster activities, namely in interdisciplinary areas;
• Establish a balanced and flexible organization of research activities;
• Promote the submission of projects to national and foreign programs.

The CID includes teachers, students, researchers, and specialized technical staff with training in its specific fields of operation, consisting of all teaching and non-teaching members who carry out activities within it. Here are the thematic lines:

• Line 1: Navigation and Maritime Safety
• Line 2: Engineering and Digitalization of the Maritime-Port Sector
• Line 3: Maritime-Port Supply Chain Economics and Management
• Line 4: Sustainability and Decarbonization in the Maritime-Port Sector

The CID focuses on the importance of interdisciplinarity and on placing individual expertise at the service of a whole, uniting to solve 21st-century challenges related to the merchant marine, transport, logistics, navigation, safety, and technology. Given the complexity of the maritime-port sector and its global importance, R&D at ENIDH embodies a spirit of teamwork and commitment. Knowledge is irreplaceable, which is why everyone is welcome.
