DECK AND BRIDGE OPERATIONS
ARPA SIMULATOR

Objective:

On This course is designed for deck officers and other personnel qualified with the radar simulator course, and its main objective is to provide trainees with necessary knowledge and ability to operate, analyze and interpret data information obtained from ARPA, under the perspective of collision avoidance and the safety of navigation, applying the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGs), as per table A-II/1 and section B-I/2 of STCW Code and the guidelines of the IMO Model Course 1.07.

  • IMO performance standards for ARPA - Res. A.422(XI) and A.823(19)
  • Acquisition of targets (manual and automatic)
  • Tracking capabilities and limitations
  • Processing delays
  • Operational warnings and system operational tests
  • True and relative vectors
  • Graphic representation of target information and danger areas
  • Information on past positions of targets being tracked
  • Operation of ARPA system
  • Set up and maintain an ARPA display
  • Obtain target information
  • Errors of interpretation of target data
  • Errors in displayed data identified and explained
  • System operational tests and determination of data accuracy
  • Risks of over-reliance on ARPA
  • Obtain information from ARPA displays
  • Application of COLREGS
